The Deceitful Farmer and the Well
It is said that long ago there was a farmer. One day he put the well on his land up for sale, and his neighbor bought it for a lot of money, which the farmer insisted on. The next day, the buyer went to his well on the farmer’s land, which had now become his property, to take some of its water.
يحكى أنه قديما كان هناك فلاحا وبأحد الأيام عرض البئر الذي بأرضه للبيع، فاشتراه جاره مقابل الكثير من الأموال والتي أصر عليها الفلاح، وبحلول اليوم التالي ذهب الجار المشتري إلى بئره بأرض الفلاح جاره والذي صار ملكا له ليأخذ بعضا من مائه.
The farmer objected to his neighbor and refused to give him a single drop of water from the well, which was basically his property. The neighbor was shocked by the farmer’s mistreatment and tried to convince him that the water inside the well was an integral part of the same well that he had bought from him the day before.
وإذا بالفلاح يعترض جاره ويأبى أن يعيطه نقطة واحدة من مياه البئر والذي في الأساس هو ملكا له، صدم الجار من سوء معاملة الفلاح، حاول إقناعه بأن المياه بداخل البئر جزء لا يتجزأ من البئر نفسه الذي اشتراه منه بالأمس.
The farmer was not only misunderstood, but he was also deceitful and cunning. He absolutely rejected all his neighbor’s attempts to convince him, and in the end, when his neighbor became upset with him and his heinous actions, he went and filed a complaint with the country judge.
لم يكن الفلاح لا يفهم ولكنه كان مخادعا وماكرا أيضا، رفض قطعا كل محاولات جاره في إقناعه، وفي النهاية عندما استاء جاره منه ومن أفعاله الشنيعة ذهب ورفع شكواه لقاضي البلاد.
The neighbor made the whole story of his neighbor the farmer before the judge, and the wise judge immediately sent for the farmer to listen to him as well.
جعل الجار قصة جاره الفلاح كاملة بين يدي القاضي، وما كان من القاضي الحكيم إلا أن أرسل في الحال في طلب الفلاح ليستمع إليه أيضا.
When the farmer came and appeared before the judge, the judge asked him about his opinion on his neighbor’s complaint against him. The farmer answered the judge, saying, “Your Honor, I sold him the well on my land, but I did not sell him the water inside it. After all, the water is not his right, so how can he take from it?!”
وعندما أتى الفلاح وامتثل بين يدي القاضي، فسأله القاضي عن رأيه في شكوى جاره ضده، فأجاب الفلاح القاضي قائلا: “يا سيدي القاضي لقد بعته البئر بأرضي ولكني لم أبعه المياه التي داخله، ففي النهاية المياه ليست من حقه فكيف له أن يأخذ منها؟!”.
The judge felt that there was no point in trying to explain to him that his neighbor had not bought the well because it was a well, but because of the water in it. In the end, the judge issued his order: “So, farmer, extract all your water from the well that has become your neighbor’s property.”
شعر القاضي بأنه لا فائدة منه فقد حاول جاهدا أن يوضح له بأن جاره لم يشتري البئر لكونه بئرا ولكن بسبب المياه التي في جوفه، في النهاية أصدر القاضي أمره: “إذاً أيها الفلاح أخرج مياهك جميعها من البئر الذي صار ملكا لجارك”.
The deceitful farmer realized that there was no escape from the judge’s order, that there was no benefit in what he was doing, and that in the end he had to give his neighbor the well’s water.
أيقن الفلاح المخادع ألا فرار من أمر القاضي، وألا فائدة مما يفعله، وأنه في النهاية عليه أن يعطي جاره البئر بمائه.
